What is Your Favorite One Skein Pattern? (Blog Give Away)

Last week, I wrote about knitting small projects and enjoying the meditative value of simple knitting. So, now I'm curious: what is your favorite one skein knitting pattern?  If you tell me about your favorite pattern in the comments, you will be entered in a drawing to win yarn for your pattern choice!

Best

One skein patterns can be quick and satisfying. (Pictured above, Ellie, knitting a Cherry Branch Hat out of Elliebelly Basilisk).  Especially during the hottest part of summer, one skein knits are great projects.

In the comments below, tell me about your favorite one skein pattern.  It doesn't matter if it's written for Elliebelly yarn or not, because, patterns can be adapted to different yarns as long as the weight and drape is a good fit.  On July 1, we'll have a drawing to pick one lucky winner from the entrants.

Here are some of my other favorites one-skein projects from Ravelry knitters to get you started:

ShellBelle76 knit Malabrigo Hand Thingies in a skein of Elliebelly Coventry Cashmere.

Handthings

Angelicasays did a Rainbow Wave from Elliebelly Angel Sock.

Sedona_Wave

Squeakybeans knit some Toast armwarmers from a skein of Elliebelly Ellie-Blue Blue Faced Leicester.

What beautiful projects by a group of amazing knitters!  Post your comment below to enter the give away.  I'm looking forward to seeing what your favorite patterns are!

  1. My favorite one skein patterns are the Martina Behm shawlettes, especially “Miss Winkle.”
    Lmecoll on Ravelry

  2. It seems almost cliché, because so many people have made them, but for one skein simple knitting I like the Honey Cowl and Susie’s Reading Mitts.

  3. Some of my favorite one skein projects are the ones where you look at new stitch patterns and make up a unique FO, either hat or cowl….

  4. My favorite one skein projects are a mix of things.
The Chickadee Cowl http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/chickadee-cowl , Zuzu’s Petals, Hermione Hearts Ron http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hermione-hearts-ron , and the Stockinette Cable Boot Cuff is a recent favorte: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stockinette-cable-boot-cuff . Tons and tons of shawls fit into my favorite one-skein projects.
As I’ve grown as a knitter, one-skein projects are some of my favorites.

  5. I think Hermione Hearts Ron is one of my all time favorites too!  I knit it several years ago from Classic Elite Yarns Princess, a blend of cashmere, angora, and a couple of other fibers thrown in for good measure.  It was so fun to knit and I reach for it all the time!

  6. That is very cool!  How do it work?  I know Ive got some skeins that are too precious to waste an inch of, and I would love to do this.  Its a beautiful pattern!

  7. It’s knitted sideways, so you can increase to the point where you have exactly half your yarn left, then start decreasing again. It does require constant access to a kitchen or postage scale, but I had only 2 grams of leftovers from a 100 gram skein when I knit it!

  8. Honey cowl is my go to for a single precious skein. I love that I can wear it styled different ways, and the pattern is easy but not boring.

  9. Susie’s Reading Mitts for sure. They are lovely, easy to knit and so impressive. They make great gifts too!

  10. I enjoy knitting up Barbie clothes for my granddaughter . Silky yarn works best. One skein is plenty, and there is always enough for a mini blanket, Barbie needs sleep too!

  11. My favorite one skein project is the Wholehearted Shawl. You can find the pattern on Ravelry. I’ve made 5 so far. Each in different colors and color mixtures. It really only uses one skein of fingering yarn, it’s fun to knit and relaxing!

  12. one of my favourite one-skein projects is the forest canopy shawl. Pretty, light, and looks more complicated than it is 🙂

  13. I’ve knit one twice now, after losing the first one. It’s such a nice project to knit, works well with a variety of yarns, and almost always turns out well. 🙂

  14. This has been my recent favorite one skein. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/camdensmom/top-down-newborn-cardigan-with-lattice-pattern
I made this for a friend (who just lost a MOMO twin and the other survived at 27 weeks- so she doesn’t quite fit the newborn size yet…it will be perfect for fall) out of some natural cestari superfine that I picked up in their seconds bin at the farm. I think it was seconds because it was really thinly spun, more of a DK weight, which was perfect for the project. The cardigan, bonnet and booties were all super easy projects (the lattice pattern on the cardi was even simple…I was worried that I was going to have to concentrate too much…hahaha). I am due with my own little one (#5!!!) the first week of July and I think this pattern would be beautiful knit up in a soft, gender neutral (we still don’t know yet…could be boy #5, could be that elusive Walker girl…lol) Elliebelly variegated solid like this cotton (colorway was called Tangled Up In Blue and I just loved the gentle variation of blue) I used for my FLS years ago. https://www.flickr.com/photos/23109319@N04/3501797395/

  15. My mom loves them! I just saw them in her purse when she was last here visiting a couple of months ago, so even a couple years later, she still wears them. I think she especially loves them for her morning walks in the park when it’s chilly so that she has some fingers free to adjust her playlists on her iphone. And I still just LOVE that colorway too. It’s so vibrant. I have a tiny bit left and need to find something to do with it 🙂

  16. My favorite (for me) is fingerless mitts. I especially love Nathair Mitts.
I also really LOVE knitting baby sweaters and designing random simple sweaters from one skein.

  17. Socks and hats are the perfect 1 skein project for me!! I love that you can make 2 socks (usually) from one skein of sock yarn. It seems like you are getting so much for your money!! Love it!!

  18. That is stunningly lovely!  I have resisted re-learning (I knew how to crochet rather intricate things when I was very young) crochet, but this is something that makes me think I need to learn.  Its really beautimous!

  19. I adore Tincanknits patterns!  Maize looks wonderful.  Ill have to add it to my queue.  I became obsessed with Malabrigos Bulky weight yarn, Rasta, this year and knit several pair of gloves from it.  They were great for some cold weather travel, but Maize looks a lot better for winter in the south!

  20. It’s perect time, I’m begin to knit my baby soaker. And don’t know what yarn the best for her. This give away likes a heaven. I love the colour of rainbow. Your work so amazing. I wish I can knit so expert so I can try to knit with expensive yarn. 🙂

  21. This is a lesser known pattern, but one of my faves! The Twistygoo – its a simple repeat of a pattern which is perfect for dr office waits and looks great in multicolored yarns or solids. Its perfect for the single ply yarns that won’t stand up to a life as mittens. Or if you are a risk taker, you can use the leftovers in some short wrist warmers. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/twistygoo

  22. Age of Brass and Steam is a great way to use all my single skeins of variegated yarn that don’t get made into soakers or longies 😉

  23. I love knitting leafy lace patterns, but in scarves the stitch pattern insists on curling, no matter how hard it’s blocked — it is, after all, just stockinette with holes in it. So, I’m currently working on adapting a simple leaf-lace to make it non-curl. When I get it sorted out, that may become my go-to, as either scarf or cowl version.
