IPhone Knitting

I got an IPhone today.  The new 3G.  I’ve been waiting forever, having decided I wanted one in early spring, when it seemed foolish to get one.  I waited for today’s launch.

The Judge snickered when I left around 6:00 a.m.  The line was long.  But I didn’t care.

I’ve just about finished the sock gusset deceases on Ollie’s Bamboo socks and I got some work in on my Manos Shrug.  I stood in line with two really nice paralegals from a local law firm, a girl who was studying for an economics exam, redshirt guy — who kept us all laughing by threatening to leave everytime we heard AT&T’s servers had crashed again, and a really nice guy and his mom — he knew all the technical stuff and showed us how the phones work while we stood in line.  Best of all, the nice Apple people sent out big trays full of Mrs. Field’s cookies a couple of hours into it.

It was worth it.  I love my phone.  I will never be without Ravelry again when I desperately need advice on, say, how to do right leaning M1 increases.  My IPhone — best knitting accessory ever!

Ellie in her Skirt

Ellie woke up and put her skirt on.  She says she loves it and isn’t taking it off all summer.  She has commented at length about the pretty patterning and the soft fit at the waist.  This pretty much sums it up.

Jump

She is the perfect person to knit for — so appreciative.  She even looked sad when I told her she would have to take it off tonight so I could finish and block it.  But, for today, she’s off to ballet with it on, and looking very happy.

Miles of stockinette.  Vicious, boring stockinette in clingy mohair.  All worth it.  Yes, indeed.

Ellie’s Be Sweet Skirt — Done!

Donesk

It’s done!

Ellie’s Be sweet Skirt!

I’m sort of excited about that.  Part of it is no doubt the giddiness of midnight knitting.  But it’s done, I think it fits (as much as you can tell by stretching something around a sleeping child), and it’s pretty cute.

The yoke is knit from a bamboo/merino blend, and has just the right combination of soft and stretch.  I knit a casing for elastic at the top, but also included two eyelets on the front for the silk-satin ribbon bow.  I think I’m going to stitch it to be double-faced, perhaps with a very light interior layer for stiffening.  The skirt still needs blocking, as well.

I was pretty much into a zombie-like state on the fourth skein.  I had close to 300 stitches on by the end and casting off took two back-to-back episodes of scrugs, but the end result is making me very happy.  I can’t wait to see Ellie’s reaction when she wakes up in the morning!

Dyeing, Knitting, and Skeining

This is a sort of round up post.  First off, I’m going to tell you about a big new change in my life and then I’ve got some pictures of knitting in progress for you!

Here’s the big change:  My electric skein winder.

Electricwinder

I was a little bit nervous about this.  It was a big investment, but I’ve been doing so much winding that I have problems with one arm, and the time had come.  Stunningly, the Judge put it together with no difficulty and it winds skeins beautifully!  The only problem is that its footprint is bigger than I anticipated, so I’m going to have to find a different permanent home for it than the table that held my manual skein winders.

The results are marvelous.  I reskeined all of this in about half an hour.

Newyarns

In knitting, I seem to have gotten myself into simultaneously working on three projects.

Ellie’s Be Sweet Skirt has gone from the fascination of watching the changes in the yarn to mind numbingly boring rounds of stockinette on the fourth skein.  And, I still have some concern that I screwed up the math and am knitting a very long skirt for a much younger child.  I’m too lazy to take it off the needles and check; so I will have to await my fate when I finish up — this is the last skein.

Elskirt

Ollie’s socks are almost done.  These are the bamboo socks he begged me to knit him, and he loves the first one!  I’m on the gusset decreases on the second sock now, and hope to finish them up this week.

Finally, my Mano shrug.  I ripped the first effort — the yarn’s beautiful colors didn’t display nicely doubled for the Anthropology shrug.  I found a basic Debbie Bliss shrug pattern, and am using it as the basis for this shrug, with some alternations to the shape and the sleeves.  Isn’t the yarn stunningly pretty?  I love Manos, and this is a very nice silk/merino blend that I’m glad I splurged on.

Woo Learns To Knit

This is the fate of teenagers who misbehave in my house.

Sassy?  Incessant text messaging?

Go Knit.

Knit with the cat on your lap.

I told him he could have his cell phone back when he finished knitting a purse for the girl he kept texting  with — nonstop through dinner and family outings.  Her name showed up on the phone as Pursegirl.  So, he’s knitting a purse.  It’s pink.

Look at his sweet hands.  He took to it so easily.  And it’s so nice to sit with him and knit.  I hope it takes him a long time to finish.

Family Time

I got to spend a wonderful evening last night with my cousins —
this is my Mom’s sister’s family, and we’re far closer than most
cousins, despite the fact that I’ve spent more than half of my life away from home now.  Since I grew up as an only child, my cousins kindly made a pact
with me decades ago that we would all be aunts and uncles to each others
children, which is a really special thing for me, as I get  nieces
and a nephew out of this deal.

One of the funniest things about my family is that everyone knits.  And I do mean everyone.

This
is my Aunt.  She knits the amazing Christmas
stockings everyone in our family has.  Last night, she was working on a wide rib scarf in a perfect shade of pink.

And this is my Uncle Dick, who is currently working on a white
zippered cardigan, but is resting on the coverlet he knit for his bed.

Everyone knit squares for his project and he knit most of them and then put everything together  with I-cord edging.

Lis Cat

Tonight I went to knit night at Lis Cat, a really cool yarn store in Long Beach.

Liskat

A very friendly knitter from Ravelry, Jamie

Jamie

(isn't that the prettiest yarn?) and his partner Abraham

Abraham1

Abraham2

(not a knitter, but omg, who cared, because look at how beautiful his intricate cross stitch pieces are!) stopped by to pick me up and drove me to LisCat for a fun night of knitting.

The other knitters had some amazing projects.

This is Christina with one of her friends (we had a great talk about our children) — I am horrible with names, especially after a long day at work, so I'm going to have to apologize in advance for not getting all of them.  Christina was knitting at least three projects at once!

Diva

And the store was great.  Katrina, the owner, has it full of cool little knitted objects like these cupcakes:

and this bowl full of balls:

and these chair covers:

I want to make all of them!

It was a really fun night.  I'm so grateful to Jamie and Abraham!
